Mascara represents the most commonly encountered product in makeup kits. But have you ever wondered if you’re applying it correctly?

Here are the most common mistakes you can make when you apply mascara!

  1. Applying too many layers

We often get the impression that applying mascara in multiple layers will result in a more intense effect. This is the most common mistake we make. The more layers you apply, the more likely it is you’ll end up getting the ‘spider-legs’ look. The maximum number of layers you should be applying is 2-4.

  1. Too much air inside the mascara container

Every time you use mascara, there’s a tendency to move the want too many times in the container prior to application. You’re probably thinking that this will help you apply more product. However, doing this will result in your mascara drying out more quickly. If you want to use more product, then insert the wand one more time into the container. If you still don’t succeed in obtaining the desired quantity, this may be a sign that it’s time to purchase a new mascara as your current one has run out.

  1. Small mascara particles land on your face

Have you ever wondered why you keep finding small mascara particles under your eyes? It’s all because the product you’re using is either too old or has dried out. Check that expiration date again. No matter what, if the mascara you’re using is causing you issues like this, it’s time to throw it out.

  1. Using an expired product

It’s a common occurrence that, once we find something we really like, we don’t want to give it up. And when we find that mascara that really makes us happy, we stay loyal to it forever. We must, however, be careful! Like any other makeup product, mascara also has an expiry date. Even if we’re in love with it, at some point in time we have to replace it with a new one. A mascara that’s gone out of date can cause allergic reactions, from eye redness to itching. It’s preferable to only use it for a maximum of three months; after this period of time, it turns into an ideal environment for bacteria.

  1. Only applying to lash tips

If you apply mascara carefully to the entire length of your lashes, you’re going to achieve that ‘wow’ effect. If, however, you’re used to only applying it to the tips, your lashes are going to look a lot shorter. Clean the wand thoroughly and ensure that the entire length of your lashes is covered in product. Don’t forget that there’s no need to keep going with the mascara layers. Tip: apply mascara in cross motions for even coverage.

  1. Rushing and applying with too much force

In the process of trying to apply product to the entire lash length, mascara often ends up on the eyelids as well. It’s like you got your makeup done in the car. This all happens due to applying too much pressure at eyelid level. Tip: use a cotton swab and a little makeup remover to help remove excess mascara.

  1. Using a lash curler… after you’ve already applied mascara

Personally, I’ve grown somewhat dependent on my lash curler as I’m sure many of you who use one have. But the most important thing is to use it correctly! The last curler is used prior to mascara application. Using it after, when the lashes are covered in product, can result in your lashes breaking; on top of that, your curler will get dirty.
